Art History Quiz for our March 25th General Meeting

The Guggenheim Collection at the AGO has given us the opportunity to view and have a beginning understanding of Modern Art.   Please write True or False next to the following statements.

Seven (7) correct answers will give you the opportunity to participate in the draw at the AGM in October.

1. - Modern Art and Contemporary Art refer to the same thing.

2. -  The evolution to modern art was ignited by the artists who rebelled against the formal, academic and rigid art form that began in the 16th century and continued through the era of Impressionism.

3. -   Solomon Guggenheim and his niece Peggy were life-long collectors of modern art and bought many of their pieces directly from the artists.

4. - Peggy Guggenheim accepted pieces from the Dada and Futurist periods and followed Marcel Duchamp's philosophy of art.

5. - Marcel Duchamp said that "retinal" art is the only acceptable type of art because it pleases the eye.

6. - The Dada movement created controversial and innovative art forms that revolutionized the art world.

7. -  Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin and Matisse were some of the avant guard artists who began the era of Modern Art, which lasted about 110 years.

8. - Modern Art was influenced by social changes caused by the Industrial Revolution, World War I and World War II.

9. -  A modern artist looks away from  narrative and traditionally structured canvases and concentrates on using texture, brush stroke and mixed media to create artwork that gives priority to the elements of composition.

10. - The elements of composition include unity; balance, movement, rhythm, and focus by managing line, colour, value-tone, texture, space and shape.

Please bring  your completed quiz and enter into the draw. OFAA meeting March 25th on the 3rd floor of OMAH   See  you there!

Notice to all Members Regarding Bistro 179

 NOTICE to all members

As of March 26,2014 we, the OFAA, will no longer be utilizing Bistro 179 as a venue for shows. It is our job as a board to work in the best interest of the entire group.
All artists now showing at the Bistro have been notified by Linda Stremel and will pick up their work at 3 pm on that date. Please be punctual and respectful of a business atmosphere and show up on time.  If you wish, please take the liberty to talk to Anthony  to make arrangements between him and yourself  to exhibit at the Bistro as an independent artist. Be sure to sort out any liability/ personal insurance  as  you will not be covered by the OFAA liability insurance.

Starry Night will be moved from that venue to a venue TBD that is on Peter Street. Yippee!! We will be part of the maddening throngs of art lovers Get prepared, paint your socks off and we will have a blast.

Lastly, spring and summer will arrive, at some point. And a great gathering to look forward to is our June potluck.  This year it will be at the Langman wildlife Sanctuary on June 24th from 2 to 8 pm. This site was used last year and enjoyed by enthusiastic members that showed up with the yummy goodies that we always have.!! We have the absolute best potlucks of any group!

Mark your calendars!!

Note: please take some time and design/paint a banner. The museum did not have the banner program last year due to renovations and now this year it has been challenging to get people involved. My 8 year old grandson from Oakville is absolutely beside himself that he is designing and painting a banner that will be displayed on the streets of our fair city. Gather your loved ones especially the youth and let them have a voice through  a creative banner. They will remember that forever!!

Warmly and with great respect:)

Festival of Banners needs our help

( an email sent to Pat Beecham from OMAH) Hi Patricia, I'm a member of the OFAA and also an employee at the Orillia Museum of Art & History. I'm in charge of the Festival of Banners this year and I was wondering if we could get some help from the association. Festival of Banners is an annual community arts project that originated in 2007 by Leslie Fournier. In 2010, the museum adopted the festival but due to our building renovations last year, the festival did not run. We had our 2014 call for entries February 1 - 28 but unfortunately the response wasn't great.. we had a lot of people take entry forms, just not a lot brought back. We are going to continue to accept submissions until we reach our goal of 100 banners. Currently we have 20 submissions. This year's theme is "Historic Orillia - A Growing Community" and applicants are encouraged to research the history of Orillia and paint a banner to tell a story. I've attached our press release for you, which showcases 2 examples of the submissions we've received so far, please feel free to send it out to members. There are already a few OFAA members who are doing banners, Betty Wells & Gwen Reilly, but we would love to have more! Entry forms are available at the museum & entry fees are as follows: $10 youth (8-18) & $20 adult (19+). Our museum hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 4pm & Sunday 1pm - 4pm. If you or any of your members have any questions, I can be contacted by email s.vessios@gmail.com or by phone 705-326-2159. Thanks so much, Samantha Vessios
